Types of Foods Prohibited for Pregnant Women

Pregnant women need to pay attention to food intake, for the health and development of the baby in the womb. The intake received by the fetus from the mother during the womb will have an impact on health conditions and growth and development. Various Types of Foods That Are Prohibited for Pregnant Women

1. Raw meat

Raw or undercooked meat can contain the toxoplasma parasite which is dangerous for pregnant women, because it can cause infection in the fetus, even if the pregnant woman does not experience any symptoms. Therefore, if pregnant women want to eat meat, including minced meat and sausages, make sure the meat is completely cooked. Cook until no part of the flesh looks bloody or pink.

2. Raw eggs

Pregnant women should avoid consuming raw eggs and foods containing raw eggs, because they are at risk of exposure to Salmonella bacteria. Although it does not have a direct impact on the fetus, Salmonella infection can make pregnant women experience indigestion characterized by diarrhea and vomiting. Make sure pregnant women only eat cooked eggs, which are marked by all the egg whites and egg yolks have become solid.

3. Fish that contain mercury

It is undeniable that fish has many benefits for pregnant women. However, some fish can contain a lot of mercury which can have a bad impact on pregnancy. Tuna, mackerel, swordfish, and shark are examples of fish that are not recommended for eating by pregnant women. The large amount of mercury present in these fish can interfere with the development of the fetal nerve. In addition, pregnant women also need to limit consumption of salmon and mackerel to avoid exposure to pollutants dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). If pregnant women want to eat sea fish, it should not exceed two moderate servings per week.

4. Milk without pasteurization

Milk is a source of various nutrients needed by pregnant women. However, pregnant women should not consume milk produced without pasteurization, because there is a risk of containing Listeria bacteria which can cause infection in pregnancy. This also applies to dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt.

5. Raw vegetables

Some types of sprouts, including bean sprouts from green beans and clover leaves, are not recommended for raw consumption. Bacteria in sprouts are very difficult to clean only with the washing process, so it needs to be cooked until done. This prohibition actually applies to everyone, but pregnant women need to be more aware of the consumption of raw vegetables to prevent bacterial infections. In addition to some of the foods above, pregnant women should also avoid some other types of food, such as liver and sushi containing raw fish, as well as drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol. Conversely, foods recommended for pregnant women are whole grains and their processed products, lean meat, low-fat milk, vegetables, and fruits. Pregnant women must be more careful in choosing foods and drinks. Avoid the types of foods that are prohibited for pregnant women above.
